About the event

Join us for a unique and creative experience at Ruckus Cafe on Saturday, February 15th as we explore Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing! Gyotaku (literally "fish rubbing") dates back to the mid-1800s, originating with fishermen who used the technique to record the size and species of their catches. Over time, it evolved into a celebrated art form. In this 2-hour hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to create your own Gyotaku print using a real (or rubber replica) fish as your subject.

Our instructor, mixed media artist Sheila Hawthorne Klotz, will guide you through every step of the process—from selecting a fish to applying special ink and transferring the design onto rice paper. You’ll explore the ancient technique of how to press the fish in order to its intricate details, scales, and textures. The result is a beautiful and unique print that reflects the essence of both nature…
